Education

In the spring of 1910 construction of Laird’s first one room school was completed in time for students to start classes in the fall. The school was originally situated on Main Street. In 1913 Laird School was moved to the present day location and expanded to accommodate more students. By 1919 it was necessary to rent a building behind the Post Office for additional classroom space. This initiated a plan to double the size of the existing school. In 1921 the school was remodeled with another addition of 2 rooms. A fourth classroom was eventually needed in 1923.

Serving the community for 37 years, by 1957 the old school was showing its age. There are some stories of snowbanks in the classroom or people falling through the ceiling from the attic! After much planning, financial discussions and amalgamation with several country schools, Laird was able to provide the students with a new four classroom brick school. Facilities included a laboratory, library, kitchen, and faculty room. In 1982, a new addition and renovation of the existing school would include the current library, gym office and main entrance. The official opening of the newest addition was held on October 21, 1983.

Even though many surrounding schools were closed due to various hardships, Laird School still exists to serve families in the Village and the surrounding area. With a faculty that loves what they do, Laird School continues to educate the minds of the future!
